Nail It: A Comprehensive Guide to Applying Press-on Nails

Do you want to have a salon-style manicure with long, elegant nails but don't have the time or money for a trip to the nail salon? There's no need to worry. With press-on nails, you can get that same look at home! In this article, we'll review how to apply press-on nails to your natural nails and show you some of our favorites.

Choose your fake nail size

Before we get to how to apply press on nails. It's important to know that if you’re new to press-on nails, you should choose a nail set size that fits your natural nail. This will make application easier and less frustrating as well as prevent the risk of damaging your natural nails. Because even though long coffin, stiletto, and almond-shaped press on nails are fun to wear, the heart attack you'll have if those beauties snag something is brutal!

Important to note is that there is not just one nail size for each finger. To be sure that you have chosen the right size when applying press ons, check the number on the back of the press-on; 0 being for your thumb as it's the biggest and 9 being for your pinky. Another thing to consider is the shape, length, and design. If you're in between sizes, we recommend going smaller so the press-on doesn't overlap on your skin.

How To Apply Press On Nails

Clean and prepare your nails

Just like a classic manicure, prep is a critical step, starting with a thorough cleaning using warm soapy water. After you wash and dry your hands thoroughly, push back your cuticles to remove excess skin using a cuticle pusher. After, you should make sure to clean your real nail with an alcohol prep pad to ensure there are no oils or dirt on your hands. You can even use a cotton ball soaked in nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol. This is important because it helps the press-ons better adhere to your nails. Make sure you really focus on the edges and grooves of your real nails.

Apply nail glue

Don't forget to file! Before applying the nail glue, use the provided nail file to gently file your nail beds enough to create a rough surface for the nail glue to adhere to. Make sure the surface of the nail is clean and dry before applying the nail glue- this will let the glue stick properly.

Apply a layer of nail glue to your natural nail that covers the full nail. Just remember, there's a fine line between applying enough glue and applying too much. With practice, you'll get it down in no time! Wait for five seconds for the glue to completely set before attempting to press on the fake nails.

Press down on each nail for at least 30 seconds to ensure a strong bond.

Do press on nails damage your nails?

Contrary to popular belief, press on nails are not damaging to your natural nails. Press-on nails are safe to use and will not damage your nails or nail beds. They can be removed without any fuss, unlike acrylic or gel nails, which require soaking in acetone. This is because they are applied with a non-toxic nail glue that protects your natural nail surfaces. They come in an array of shapes and sizes that you can change for everyday wear or special occasions.

How to remove press on nails without nail polish remover

To start the removal process, soak your nails in warm water for 15-20 minutes or until the press on nails start to loosen. Lift from under the cuticle and gently peel off the press ons. Never just pull the press on nails off! Once the press on nail is removed, the natural nail may be dehydrated. To restore the natural nail's moisture, apply hand lotion and give your natural nails 1-2 days rest before reapplying.
